Yesterday in CWU agency our class got to skype with Brian Solis a principal analyst at Altimeter Group. He is also an award-winning author, prominent blogger, and keynote speaker.
Our class got to talk to him because in agency this quarter we read his first award winning book Engage. In my blog today I will talk about my overall thoughts and reaction to listening to him speak.
The very first thing that struck me while Solis was speaking was that he seemed extremely smart. He had long winded thought out answers that really stuck with you when he was finished, unfortunately we were only able to ask him three or four questions because his answers were so long but still he provided us with tons of information or food for thought. The next thing that stood out to me was when he said was “I have always wondered why there is no people, purpose, or promise within the four p’s of marketing”. He really had a point with that statement because so much of marketing and PR has to with those exact things now to keep a business operating well. And the final tidbit of information Solis provided us with yesterday did make me a bit nervous was that social media as we see it today is on it’s way out and the whole idea of using social media is beginning to die… UM YIKES! said all the the PR majors in the room. He did offer a way to combat the upcoming change become a business strategist, develop you skills in both business objective on the customer side and business side and become a social media enabler.
It was really interesting to listen to what Solis had to say and it was such a privilege to have him skype in with us especially with him being one of the founding father of social media and social marketing.
